The beginning of our business was definitely the most challenging when we didn’t have any photography or videography mentorship. There wasn’t a specific moment when I chose to begin. However, as soon as I had the money, I was on my way to buy first semi pro camera! From there, it started with asking friends and network at church if I could photograph them. I was able to gain a lot of experience while just starting.
You see, I started with zero understanding about camera functions other than how to simply take a picture. There was one time I deleted all the files on my personal SD card when I was just playing around with the buttons to learn the camera. I had lost a lot of cherished moments I hadn’t gotten around to printing! After that, I joined many different photography groups where I began to gain more skills and have resources to use.
There were so many moments of frustration and wanting to give up. One specific time, I had stayed up editing late and felt I was going nowhere. That night I prayed and told God, “I’m just not good enough”. The next morning, I woke up to a message from a friend I hadn’t spoken to recently. God used her to talk to me! The message said God had given me an amazing gift and the privilege to capture all the masterpieces he has created, from a sunset to a moment shared between families, and not let anyone put me down because I am of great value. This was a turning point in my business to show joy in times of tribulation because there is always triumph. There are a few moments when your faith grows a little more and that moment was one of those moments, so I kept going!
It took a couple of years to figure out my style. I was told it would be the hardest part, and they were right! There are so many beautiful photography styles, and I wasn’t sure which one I could identify with. I believe that images can speak to you, and I wanted mine to speak love, timelessness, romance, classic, and joy. Once I figured out what my editing style looked like, it was easier to move forward because it felt like I had given my brand an identity.
I want to help other creatives skip what took me so long to figure out because I didn’t know where to start. I have helped a lot of other photographers through mentorship start photography, and they now run a business doing when they love. It brings me no greater joy to watch them grow, and their style evolve. I want to do the same for you! Luis and I will be offering one-on-one mentorship in photography and videography. You don’t have to go through moments of frustration where you are unsure where to begin. We can help guide you with what equipment we recommend, editing software guidance, camera basics, and more!
